Now for our Who am I Quiz question of the day
Who am I?
After a series of bereavements that left me orphaned at 6 and widowed at 20, my
daughter Lelia and I moved to St. Louis to start over. I worked days as a
washerwoman and went to night school before inventing (1905) a process for
straightening the hair of African-Americans. My process, combining my unique formula
with brushes and heated combs, caught on, and with the money from my successful
business my daughter and Imoved to Denver. I married Charles J. Walker, and began
promoting my product and process. I opened a permanent office in Pittsburgh in 1908,
which my daughter ran, and in 1910 I formed a laboratory in Indianapolis,
where I developed products and trained my beauticians, known as “Walker Agents.”
The agents and the products were recognized in black communities throughout the U.S.
and Caribbean for promoting the philosophy that cleanliness and loveliness could
advance the plight of African-Americans. At my death, the multi-million dollar estate was
left to various philanthropic organizations and to my daughter, whose philanthropic
endeavors were key to funding the Harlem Renaissance.
Who am I? Please submit your educated guess on who this prominent African
American is to the main office written on a scrap piece of paper. Make sure you include
your full name and first period teacher. A winner will be selected from correct
responses and awarded a Loy Norrix water bottle and pen. Who am I?
Congratulations to our Who Am I winner from Tuesday – Zach Borden in Mr. Porco’s
first period class. That brings the winning classrooms to one for Maxwell and one for
Porco. Zach had the correct answer of Audre Lorde. Zach was one of 47 correct
answers submitted Tuesday.
