There will be a meeting for the Young Democrats of Loy Norrix this Friday from 7am till 7:30am in Ms. William’s room A-14. All are welcome to join.

Winterfest week is coming quick! The Athletic department is looking for your suggestions on what the winterfest spirit days should be this year. If you haven’t done so already please check your student email where you will find the form to submit your suggestions. We will be accepting suggestions until Tuesday January 22nd at 1 o’clock.

The National Art Honor Society will meet tomorrow, Friday January 25th at 2:30 in A-12.  We will be electing officers.  Junior and Seniors interested in Visual Arts are welcome to attend.

Your AP Scholar for today is Mehran Nayeem! Mehran is a senior & has completed AP Biology, AP Language, AP Government, & AP Spanish. He is currently taking AP Calculus, AP Statistics, & AP European History. He feels that the strict work schedules with AP courses improved his time management skills which will be critical for success in college. Mehran would recommend AP Gov because of the insight into the functioning governments, which is important in today’s political climate. Mehran will be attending Michigan State next year to study computer engineering.


Your featured AP teacher is: Ms. Alison Nelson! Ms. Nelson teacher AP Biology which is an advanced course with an intense and comprehensive study of biology. It is a great class to prepare for the rigor of college & highly recommended if students are thinking of pursuing a career in medicine or science.

The Loy Norrix Swimming & Diving Swam Lakeview last night.  Even though Knights were beat by the Spartans, the meet turned out to be one of the strongest performances of the season. Many of the Knights went there best times.

Last Thursday night, the Loy Norrix Overwatch team was back in action against Papillion (Pah – Pee – Yohn) High School from Papillion, Nebraska.  The Knights showed an awesome display of teamwork and improvement across the board as they easily defeated their opponents by a score of 2 – 0. Stay tuned to the announcements next week for information about when the Overwatch and League of Legends team will next compete. Great work Knights!

The 9th and 10th grade book quiz bowl team are now the District Champs for 8th straight year.  Thanks to: Jayda Smith, Carson Williams, Claire Beougher and Kamryn Kimbrough.

The 11th and 12th grade book quiz bowl team are now the District Champs for the 7th straight year, Thanks to: Camilla Bistrek, Cecilia Morales-Cabrallo, EliziahAnderson and Lexi Weeden.

Your AP scholar for today is: Katie Garcia! Katie is a Junior & has completed AP US History. She is currently taking AP Language, AP Government, & AP European History. Katie’s AP classes have improved her time management skills & made her work harder to achieve grades she is pleased with. She would recommend AP Euro because the subject is interesting & Mr. Porco is very encouraging. Katie plans on applying to K College & Albion next year & would like to study political science & film & media studies.

Your featured AP teacher for today is: Mr. Adam Hosler. Mr Hosler teaches AP Calculus which is the study of how things change, from rates of speed, to rotational volumes.  In AP Calculus we use derivative and integrals to solve problems that could not previously be solved, even with technology.  In AP Calculus you will learn a lot about how to reason through a problem, methods that can be applied to any subject matter, not just math.  There are deep connections between Calculus and the physical sciences as well. When Mr. Hosler is not teaching he enjoys spenidng time with his 2 children, Abigail and Adam, & his wife who is a teacher at Woods Lake Elementary. He also collects comic books and has over 45,000 books.

Your AP Scholar for today is: Thomas Ouitan. Thomas is a senior and has completed AP Computer Science, AP Language, & AP US History. He feels better prepared for college since the increased workload & studying in his AP classes are similar to college classes. Thomas has applied to U of M, Michigan Tech, Penn State, & Purdue University. He plans on majoring in some type of engineering.

Kalamazoo United has a strong start to the ski season.  The Kalamazoo United Alpine Ski Team had a strong first event of the 2019 season with five top ten finishes across the four events. Ella Rathbun  participated in her first High School ski race: The team is back in action on Wednesday, January 23rd at 4:45pm at Bittersweet!

Your AP Scholar for today is: Ovy’once Hoskins! Ovy’once is a senior & has completed AP Biology, AP Chemistry, & AP Spanish. She feels that her AP classes have made her more prepared for the workload of college courses & helped her to become a more critical thinker. She would recommend both AP Spanish & AP Biology since they teach you about different cultures & make you more aware of your surroundings. She has applied to Tennessee State, Central Michigan, Grand Valley, & Michigan State to study neurology.

AP French is an opportunity for students to use the French language to deepen their understanding of the Francophone culture, while also improving their language skills. Class of 2020 executive board will be meeting today, Tuesday after school until 3:30 in room D14 by the library.

If you’re looking to blow off a little steam and have an interest in playing or watching e-sports? Then the Loy Norrix e-sports club invites to its first ever Brawhalla Open, scheduled today, Tuesday, Jan. 15th from 2:30-4PM in the library. There is no cost to participate and spectators are welcome. For more information, contact Mr. Greeley in room B-13 or Dr. Pickell in room B-12.

The Loy Norrix eSports club is proud to announce that our teams are back in action this winter for the Winter Open in the High School Esports League. If you’re interested in following the action, tune in to the Loy Norrix EsportsTwitch channel tonight at 5 PM as our Overwatch team is back in action against Monarch Esports from (pah-pee-yohn) Papillion High School in Papillion, Nebraska. We hope to have your support this coming season!

Just 5 more days until the MLK’s Celebration at WMU this Sat. Don’t miss the fun, opportunity to learn about college life and of course the wonderful lunch.  The Loy NorrixBook Quiz Bowl teams have been district champs for 7 years for the 9th and 10th graders and 6 years for the 11th and 12th graders.  We hope to up those totals after the luncheon.

Your AP Scholar for today is: Luis Gutierrez! Luis is a junior and has completed both AP Spanish & AP Psychology. He’s glad he took AP classes since they made him prioritize homework, improved his study habits, & improved his GPA. He would definitely recommend both AP Spanish & AP Psychology since they are taught by great teachers who push you to do your best. Luis isn’t sure what his plans are when he graduates next year, but he does plan on going to school nearby.

Your featured AP teacher is Mr. Bergan! Mr. Bergan teaches AP Psychology which is the systematic and scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of humans and animals.  In AP Psychology you will examine the facts, principles, perspectives, & research, major figures and phenomena associated with an intro level course in college. You should consider take AP Psychology because:

-It is an interesting subject that is easily relatable,

– It is a good class to take when beginning AP courses.
-It is challenging yet fun
-The subject matter and instructor are engaging


In his free time, Mr. Bergan enjoys weight lifting, home maintenance projects, spending time with his family, coaching & watching sports, & going to the movies.

Your AP scholar for today is: Mikaela Jerue! Mikaela is a senior and has completed AP Spanish, AP Psychology, & AP English Language. She is currently taking AP Statistics. Mikaela feels that her AP classes have helped her manage her time & take notes more effectively. She also feels better able to deal with stressful school workloads. She would definitely recommend AP Lang & AP Psych because they are both taught by wonderful teachers who did a great job preparing her for college expectations. Mikaela is planning on attending Western next year & majoring in Psychology.
